The Role of Umbilical Cord Stem Cells in Regenerative Medicine

Regenerative medicine is the field of medical science that is concerned with the use of natural cells, tissues, or organs in treatments for a wide variety of conditions.

There are many ways in which the regeneration of such materials can make a significant difference to the severity of a person’s symptoms, which is why regenerative medicine is one of the most interesting areas of medical science.

At the Stemwell Clinic, our focus is on one particular branch of regenerative medicine, stem cell therapy. Over recent decades, there has been considerable research into stem cells and the potential for positive outcomes resulting from their application.

Stem cells can be found in various parts of the body. These include the liver, bone marrow, and blood. Our experienced team believe, however, that umbilical cord stem cells offer the most promising prospects of a successful result.

What Are Umbilical Cord Stem Cells?

Many studies have shown that the umbilical cord is the purest and richest source of stem cells. The blood in this part of the body contains billions of stem cells, and in particular mesenchymal stem cells.

The key property of stem cells is that they are undifferentiated. The human body contains about 200 different types of cells. Every one of our cells, however, began as a stem cell. Each cell is a blank canvas upon which the specific purpose of that cell can then be painted.

This is the property that makes umbilical cord stem cells of such interest to many physicians. Stem cells can transform into all the types of tissue the body needs – bone, muscles, tendons, blood vessels, and more – and, if applied to an area where the body’s normal function has been impaired, they can regenerate healthy tissue.

At the Stemwell Clinic, we harvest umbilical cord stem cells from healthy volunteers. The collection of these cells is non-invasive, which is not the case for some other types of stem cells.

After the umbilical cord stem cells have been analysed and prepared, they can be given to patients with a wide variety of conditions. Application is minimally invasive and is carried out either intravenously, or by targeted injection into an affected area.

With the help of umbilical cord stem cells, the doctors at the Stemwell Clinic have successfully treated thousands of patients with issues ranging from joint injuries to osteoarthritis and chronic pain.
