Preparing for Stem Cell Therapy

If the decision is taken, after consultation with the Stemwell Clinic team, that you should proceed with stem cell treatment, what can you expect?

Any form of medical treatment, particularly one that involves procedures with which you may not be familiar, can lead to a certain amount of anxiety and concern about what will be involved. So here’s a handy guide to what to expect, and what to do, when you are preparing for stem cell therapy.

Steps You Can Take Before Your Procedure

It’s important to understand that not all stem cell procedures are the same. Every course of treatment we prescribe is tailored to the individual’s precise needs. So there may be ways in which the stem cell treatment application, and the preparation for it, varies from case to case.

Nevertheless, there are some basic principles you should apply in the countdown to your treatment:

  • Stick to a plant-based diet: Ideally, you should eat as healthy as possible for at least 30 days before your therapy and 90 days after your therapy. That means cutting out red meat, gluten, and dairy, while focusing on foods high in omega 3 such as salmon, flaxseeds, spinach, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and healthy fats such as avocado, olive oil, nuts, seeds, etc, and detoxifying fruits (berries, apples, lemons) and vegetables.
  • Avoid alcohol, caffeine, and tobacco: These substances can interfere with the healing process. You should avoid alcohol altogether for 30 days before and 90 days after your procedure and avoid all nicotine products.
  • Don’t take anti-inflammatories: Inflammation is part of the healing process generated by stem cell treatment, and drug products like Advil and aspirin can interfere with that. Avoid them for the week before.
  • Drink lots of water if it is safe to do so: Up to two liters on each of the two days before, and as much as possible on the day itself – water can alleviate some side-effects of stem cell therapy.

What to Expect During Your Therapy

Again, your protocol will depend on your condition and medical history. But the main steps that might be involved are:

  1. A free video consultation before you travel to see us, during which we discuss your situation and determine your candidacy for stem cell therapy. This may require diagnostic imaging studies such as an MRI or initial blood testing.
  2. An initial evaluation when you arrive, which may include blood tests and imaging, if not done before your arrival in Bogota, Colombia.
  3. Intravenous detoxification therapy to further decrease inflammation.
  4. Targeted and/or intravenous stem cell therapy.
  5. Hyperbaric chamber therapy.
