How Are Stem Cells Harvested?

At the heart of the work we do at the Stemwell Clinic are stem cells, which are the foundation cells for all the organs and tissue in the human body. As a result, the process of harvesting stem cells is fundamental to the treatments we administer to all our patients.

There are many sites in the body from which stem cells can be collected and then used to assist in the generation of healthy tissue. It is possible to find stores of stem cells in the bone marrow and in adipose tissue.

However, our expertise and experience has led us to conclude that the richest source of the most potent stem cells that we can use in our treatments is in the umbilical cord tissue of full-term, healthy volunteer donors.

The Process of Harvesting Stem Cells

The stem cells we use in our treatments are collected from umbilical cord tissue once the donor in question has given birth.

The cells are found in a substance called Wharton’s Jelly, which protects and insulates blood vessels in the umbilical cord. Our expert team carefully collects the stem cells and analyzes and processes them so that they are ready to be used as part of our stem cell treatments.

One of the advantages of harvesting stem cells from this source is that they can be collected in a non-invasive procedure. Collecting stem cells from bone marrow, for instance, can be a far more complex process.

Once those cells have been harvested, we can apply as many as 300 million of them at any time to a patient who might potentially benefit from stem cell therapy.

How Stem Cells Work

The stem cells we harvest from donors’ umbilical cord tissue are undifferentiated, or blank, cells. They can be accurately described as the building blocks of the human body.

Stem cells can be applied to an area of the body that requires the generation of healthy tissue, or an anti-inflammatory treatment. The harvested stem cells can be applied directly to an afflicted area, or introduced intravenously.

They then go to work in the creation of healthy tissue that can support the healing process and improve the quality of life of people suffering from a wide variety of conditions.
