What is GERD?
GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease) happens when stomach acid frequently flows back into the esophagus, causing persistent heartburn, regurgitation, and potentially long-term lining damage. It’s more than just discomfort over time; it can lead to tissue injury and complications.
Why Stem Cells Matter
While current GERD treatments mainly control acidity, regenerative medicine offers a different vision, one aimed at repairing the esophagus itself. Here’s how research and early human studies are paving the way:
- Clinical proof-of-concept: A first-in-human procedure used a scaffold seeded with adipose‑derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) to reconstruct part of a damaged esophagus, resulting in new tissue growth and epithelial regeneration (PMID: 34590055).
- Ongoing clinical development: A Phase 1 trial (NCT 05877300) is testing MSC-seeded scaffolds to assess safety and feasibility for esophageal repair.
These advances suggest that, in the future, we might not just manage GERD symptoms, but actually heal reflux-related damage.
Our Role – Stemwell Regenerative Medicine (Bogotá, Colombia)
At Stemwell, we’re committed to bringing cutting-edge regenerative medicine to patients who are looking for more than symptom management. Based in Bogotá, our clinic leverages ethically sourced, high‑quality stem cells (such as umbilical cord MSCs, adipose MSCs) and GMP-grade lab protocols.
While we do not (yet) market a “stem-cell cure for GERD,” our work in tissue repair, anti-inflammation, and immunomodulation aligns with the scientific trajectory that could one day support regenerative GERD therapies.
If you or someone you know is exploring regenerative options, reach out, your eligibility can be accessed via a free consultation. We’re here to provide transparent, safe, and personalized plans.
